Bhagavad Gita teachings for life, with real decisions

The short answer

The Gita's teachings for life come down to a few moves: act and let go of the result, do the duty that is yours, speak the truth gently, and see clearly before you choose. Below are 10 Gita quotes on life, word for word, and beside 9 of them a real call from the KarmaLens gallery that the verse speaks to.

The English is Annie Besant's translation; the Sanskrit is the original.

1. Act, and let go of the result

Thy business is with the action only, never with its fruits; so let not the fruit of action be thy motive, nor be thou to inaction attached.
BG 2.47 — English: Annie Besant, via Wikisource (public_domain)

A real call it speaks to (Ambition): Stop chasing fame as the measure of a career; build skill and contribution first, let recognition follow or not.

2. Stay even in success and failure

Perform action, O Dhananjaya, dwelling in union with the divine, renouncing attachments and balanced evenly in success and failure: equilibrium is called yoga.
BG 2.48 — English: Annie Besant, via Wikisource (public_domain)

The lesson: Decide by what is right to do, then let success and failure land where they land. A choice you can live with only if it succeeds was made by the outcome.

3. Doing nothing is also a choice

Perform thou right action, for, action is superior to inaction, and, inactive, even the maintenance of thy body would not be possible.
BG 3.8 — English: Annie Besant, via Wikisource (public_domain)

A real call it speaks to (Ambition): Not knowing your path at 15 is not a failure — paralysis from fear of the wrong choice is the only real trap here.

4. Your own duty over a borrowed one

Better is one's own duty though destitute of merits than the well-executed duty of another. He who doeth the duty laid down by his own nature incurreth not sin.
BG 18.47 — English: Annie Besant, via Wikisource (public_domain)

A real call it speaks to (Family): Sacrificing your life trajectory to ease parental sadness creates mutual harm; honesty about your values and boundaries is the harder dharmic path.

5. Speak the truth gently

Speech causing no annoyance, truthful, pleasant and beneficial, the practice of the study of the Scriptures, are called the austerity of speech.
BG 17.15 — English: Annie Besant, via Wikisource (public_domain)

A real call it speaks to (Integrity): Silent agreement to preserve hierarchy costs truth and your own discernment; respectful disagreement is the harder duty.

6. Do not decide in anger

From anger proceedeth delusion; from delusion confused memory; from confused memory the destruction of Reason; from destruction of Reason he perishes.
BG 2.63 — English: Annie Besant, via Wikisource (public_domain)

A real call it speaks to (Creative): Pull them aside first. If the lie keeps walking, then the room gets to see.

7. Count the cost to others first

The action undertaken from delusion, without regard to capacity and consequences—loss and injury to others—that is declared to be dark.
BG 18.25 — English: Annie Besant, via Wikisource (public_domain)

A real call it speaks to (Ambition): A year of absence isn't a rounding error. Name what it costs them — then decide who you'd respect tomorrow.

8. Your example sets the standard

Whatsoever a great man doeth, that other men also do; the standard he setteth up, by that the people go.
BG 3.21 — English: Annie Besant, via Wikisource (public_domain)

A real call it speaks to (Community): Speak. Standing that survives silence in this room isn't standing — it's complicity with a nicer name.

9. Know which fears are real

That which knoweth energy and abstinence, what ought to be done and what ought not to be done, fear and fearlessness, bondage and liberation, that Reason is pure, O Pârtha.
BG 18.30 — English: Annie Besant, via Wikisource (public_domain)

A real call it speaks to (Integrity): Speak. The job that costs you this silence isn't a job — it's a lease on your conscience.

10. Know it all, then choose

Thus hath wisdom, more secret than secrecy itself, been declared unto thee by Me; having reflected on it fully, then act thou as thou listest.
BG 18.63 — English: Annie Besant, via Wikisource (public_domain)

A real call it speaks to (Health): Give them the full cost. Then it's a choice — until then, it's just consent without information.

Krishna gives Arjuna the whole teaching and then hands the choice back to him. Read his advice to Arjuna as a decision, or start with 2.47, on karma.

Decide yours

A verse becomes useful the day you apply it to your own life. Write the decision in front of you. KarmaLens weighs it on the Gita's 8 lenses, makes one clear call, and sets the verse that fits beside it, word for word.
